The Ultimate Family Adventure
Planning a family holiday? Look no further! Kruger National Park (KNP) offers an unforgettable African experience. Imagine encountering the Big Five up close. KNP is a premier destination with diverse wildlife. This blog explores Kruger's wonders, from morning safaris when animals are most active to diverse ecosystems. Learn why Kruger National Park is the ultimate family adventure, blending excitement, education, and natural beauty.
Kruger National Park is located within Mpumalanga. Kruger’s field guides share their knowledge of the 147 species of mammals, more than 500 species of birds and 336 species of trees; there's lots to learn! Besides safaris, you can find various activities such as jungle tours and waterfall tours to entertain the whole family.

HOME OF THE BIG FIVE

ELEPHANT
Kruger's elephants once faced near complete poaching by the 1900s for the ivory trade. The formation of the park in 1926 was instrumental in reversing this trend. Elephants can spend up to 18 hours a day foraging for food. In 2002, 30 tons of South African ivory had been sold from the Kruger Park, the revenue from which helped fund lengthy research and conservation operations.

AFRICAN BUFFALO
Buffaloes can be lethally dangerous when faced with a pride of lions. When lions prowl, buffaloes are quick to react. An adult buffalo can weigh 60 100 pounds with its heavy upward curved set of horns, and can be likened to "an oversized blender". Bovine tuberculosis contracted from domestic cattle on the park boundary infiltrates the herds, and also effects other members of the big five including the ancient majestic rhinoceros.
RHINOCEROS
Black rhino mothers are known to run in front of their young so they can tackle any danger head-on. Their horns can grow over two feet long and are made of keratin, the same substance found in human fingernails. Poachers trading in rhino horn are still out to hunt black rhino and they're easily identified in the bush. By 2016, Rhino numbers had dropped considerably with over three rhinos poached every day.

LION
When the park was established, lions were classified as vermin because they were competing for the antelope used in the meat and leather trade; hunters shot them on sight but were often mauled to death by the powerful cats. Lions are still hunted for sport and medicinal potions used by mystics and witch doctors. Tourists searching for Lions should look out for tell-tale signs of danger from prey species.
LEOPARD
The most elusive of the Big Five, leopards' beautiful spotted coats were sought-after by merchants trading with the East, and worn as decorative clothing by mighty Chiefs and kings of local tribes. Early hunters were after the coats for merchants trading with the East. They are normally nocturnal but they won't hesitate to hunt during the day when prey is on the move, and adaptability is paramount for solitary animals that are in constant competition with larger groups of predators competing for the same prey.
